What are Tire Rotations For?
If you are a newer driver, you’ve likely heard that you will need a tire rotation soon. However, you may not yet know what tire rotations are for. As you drive your vehicle, the tread of your tires will slowly decrease. Getting a tire rotation will help ensure that your tires wear evenly, thus maximizing the longevity of these rubber donuts.
It’s also important to note that different tires will wear quicker on different vehicles based on its drivetrain. The front two tires tend to wear quicker than the rear two tires on front-wheel drive models since the front tires are holding most of the vehicle’s weight. Rear-wheel drive models are the opposite of front-wheel drive where the rear tires tend to wear quicker than the front. Vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive wear differently, often depending on the terrain the vehicle is being driven on.
How to Check Tire Tread
If you don’t know when your last tire rotation was, it’s a good idea to check your tire tread. To do so, simply find a quarter and go to your tire. Face Washington’s head towards you and insert the coin so that his head is upside down. Now, it’s a good idea to have at minimum 1/8th of an inch of tread on each of your tires. Since the edge of the coin to Washington’s head is 1.8th of an inch, you should replace any tires that allow you to see the top of his head. Repeat this for all four tires and take note of any tires that are wearing out quicker than the others.
